Drawing Tips for Young Artists
Secrets to making your art even more amazing!
1. Start Lightly
When you first start a drawing, use a light touch with your pencil. "Whisper lines" are easier to erase if you need to change something later. Once you are happy with the shape, you can go over it with darker, stronger lines.
2. Look for Shapes
Everything in the world is made of simple shapes! A cat's head is a circle, its ears are triangles. A house is a square with a triangle roof. Try to "see" these simple shapes before you start drawing details. This makes drawing anything much easier.
3. Practice, Practice, Practice
Drawing is a skill, just like riding a bike or playing soccer. The more you do it, the better you get! keep a sketchbook and try to draw something small every day. It doesn't have to be perfect—it just has to be fun.
4. Don't Fear Mistakes
In art, there are no mistakes, only "happy accidents"! Sometimes a wiggly line makes a drawing look even more interesting. If something doesn't look "right," ask yourself: "How can I turn this into something else?"
5. Use References
Professional artists look at pictures all the time. If you want to draw a tiger, look at a photo of a tiger while you draw. Observing the real world helps you understand how things really look.
